Medical Fallacy #2

"The benefits out way the risks"

As I wrote in medical fallacy #1, the pharmaceutical companies are counting on you not to have any common sense. The funny thing is, they’re already telling you in their statement that there are going to be risks. The funny thing is, they can’t calculate the risk and neither can you. How would you know whether the secondary condition(s)(risk) that the medication may cause won’t be worse than the primary condition you originally took the medication for? How can the benefits out way there risks if the medication is for one particular ailment and there are 10, 20, or 30 possible side effects?

First off, even if the primary condition is stabilized, a second condition created by the drug would still put you in the hole. Common sense tells me that you can’t dig a hole to fill a hole and call yourself being ahead or breaking even. Most often, the drugs have many side affects, which to me nullifies the supposed benefit. Most times, you don’t even have to listen that carefully to the disclaimer said at the end of the commercial, nor do you have to squint to read the disclaimer on the packaging of the medication.  They broadcast and publish the risks well within the range of basic social comprehension.  By announcing the risk, the drug companies appear to the public as if they have integrity, when the truth is, it’s all just a legal narration for the relinquishment of liability.  To top it all off, the narrator of the commercial harmonizes their voice with a soft tone in order to draw the listener away from the drugs dangers.

Anyway, the basic point is, common sense should tell you that a drug designed to remedy 1 condition doesn’t benefit(assist) you if there are 2,3,4,5 or 10 different side affects.  You don’t have to be a nuclear physicist to recognize something so simple. Let’s say you have a condition that puts your health at a -7. The doctor prescribes a drug that alleviates the condition and now your health is back to what is considerd normal(0). But wait, the side affects of the medication add up to -7 as well. What is your overall health at the end of the day? Figure it out…
